Recently, Beaumont-Cherry Valley Water District has experienced an increase in fire hydrant thefts, joining other water agencies throughout the region facing the same troubling issue.

At first glance, a fire hydrant may appear to be just another piece of public infrastructure. In reality, it is one of the most important tools firefighters rely on to protect lives, homes, businesses, and neighborhoods during an emergency.

When a hydrant is stolen or damaged, the impact extends well beyond replacing a piece of equipment. Utility crews must respond to secure the area, repair the damage, restore the water system, and install a replacement hydrant. These unexpected repairs require valuable staff time and public resources that could otherwise be focused on planned maintenance and improvements.

Most importantly, hydrants are installed to support emergency response. They are carefully placed throughout our community to provide firefighters with reliable access to water when every second counts.

While BCVWD works closely with local fire and law enforcement agencies to respond to these incidents, protecting public infrastructure is something we all share.

If you notice suspicious activity around a fire hydrant, please do not approach those involved. Instead, report the activity to local law enforcement.
