ASCE Los Angeles Section Award

The Beaumont MDP Line 16 Project received the Outstanding Flood Control Project of the Year Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Los Angeles Section at its annual awards ceremony on September 30. 🎉 The project will now be nominated for a Region 9 Award.

Completed as a joint project with the Riverside County Flood Control and Water Conservation District, the underground storm drain captures enough stormwater to supply as many as 900 local families a year and stores it in the Beaumont groundwater basin. It simultaneously protects Cherry Valley properties from flood events.

BCVWD and Riverside County Flood Control hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 7 to celebrate the project’s completion. The project was also recognized at the ASCE San Bernardino and Riverside Branch Gala Awards in August.

Accepting the award on behalf of the District were Board Treasurer Lona Williams, Board Director Andy Ramirez, General Manager Dan Jaggers, and Director of Engineering Mark Swanson. Learn more at bcvwd.org. #BCVWD #StormwaterCapture # ASCE #RiversideCountyFloodControl

Clean Gutters Reminder

As we anticipate another possible rainy season, remember to clean your gutters! Clogged gutters can cause damage to your property by preventing water from flowing. Take the time to clear out any debris 🍂, such as leaves, branches and dirt, to ensure that your gutters can effectively direct water away from your home and back into nature – such as to our area’s surface water and groundwater!

Cooking Conservation Tips

What are your dinner plans? 🥗 🌮 🍔

When you’re cooking up something delicious tonight, remember to be water-wise! Here are a few tips for conservation in the kitchen:

1. Cook food in as little water as possible. This will also help retain more nutrients.
2. Use the proper size pans for cooking — large pans require more cooking water than necessary.

Chemical Injection Unit

BCVWD is taking every opportunity to recharge water while coming out of the worst drought on record. That’s why we partnered with San Gorgonio Pass Water Agency (SGPWA) to install an algaecide injection feeder at the Mountain View turnout to control algae in SGPWA’s ponds.

BCVWD staff supported efforts to set up the injection based on their prior experience using EarthTec algaecide at the Noble Creek Recharge Facility. The collaboration supports SGPWA in bringing the maximum amount of water possible into the area.

We were happy to share institutional knowledge with our partners and to ensure we bring as much water to the region as possible during this exceptional year of rain and snowfall.

Fall is Here

Welcome fall! Water usage may go down as the weather cools, but conservation is still important. If you’re watering outdoor plants, remember they require less water in the fall as daylight hours and the sun’s intensity decrease. 🍂🍁

National Indoor Plant Week

Did you know the third week of September is #NationalIndoorPlantWeek? 🪴

It’s a great time to be water-wise when we care for our indoor plants! Here are some tips:

1. Collect the water you use for rinsing produce to water houseplants.
2. Did you accidentally drop an ice cube? Don’t throw it in the sink. Hydrate your houseplant instead.
3. Keep a bucket in the shower to catch water as it warms up. Use this to water houseplants.
