Why Is My Water Bill Higher in the Summer?

Every summer, BCVWD receives calls from customers who are surprised to see their water usage, and water bill, increase. In most cases, the increase isn’t due to a leak or billing error. It’s the result of changes in outdoor water use.

As temperatures rise, lawns, gardens, and landscaping often require additional irrigation. Even small adjustments to sprinkler timers can have a significant impact. Adding just a few minutes to each watering station can increase water use substantially over the course of a month.

Many households use two or even three times more water during the summer months than they do during the winter, primarily due to outdoor irrigation.

If you’re looking to manage your water bill this summer, consider:

  • Checking your irrigation timer settings
  • Watering in the morning, before the heat of the day
  • Looking for broken sprinkler heads or leaks
  • Consider adding ground cover, like mulch, around trees and gardens to help retain moisture

Understanding how your water use changes throughout the year can help you avoid surprises and make informed decisions about your water consumption.

Planning Today for Tomorrow’s Community

When people think about growth in Beaumont and Cherry Valley, they often notice new homes, businesses, warehouses, and community facilities. What many don’t see is the extensive planning and engineering work happening behind the scenes to ensure our water system is prepared to serve that growth.

At the April 23, 2026 Board meeting, BCVWD’s Engineering Department provided an update highlighting the significant volume of development activity currently underway throughout the District’s service area. Engineering staff are actively coordinating dozens of projects at various stages of planning, review, design, and construction. These projects include residential neighborhoods, apartment communities, commercial developments, industrial facilities, churches, and other community-serving projects.

As our community continues to grow, Engineering staff are conducting water supply assessments, hydraulic modeling, fire flow analysis, plan reviews, annexations, construction coordination, and numerous other technical evaluations to ensure new development can be supported while maintaining reliable service for existing customers.

“Reliable water service requires more than pipes and pumps, it requires planning,” said BCVWD Board Member David Hoffman. “The Board appreciates the tremendous amount of work our Engineering and Operations teams perform behind the scenes to support growth, protect system reliability, and make thoughtful use of District resources. Their efforts help ensure new development is integrated responsibly while maintaining the level of service our customers expect.”

Whether reviewing a new residential community, evaluating infrastructure for industrial development, or coordinating construction activities, BCVWD staff play a critical role in preparing for the future while protecting the reliability of today’s water system. While Engineering staff lead much of the planning and technical review process, Operations staff also support development and infrastructure efforts, including completing certain work in-house when practical to help maximize value for ratepayers.
