Family Fun Month

August is Family Fun Month — at BCVWD, we think water conservation is loads of fun! Highlight the importance of water conservation at home with these activities.

  1. Dye your toilet tank with food coloring. If it seeps into the toilet bowl, you have a leak. This easy family experiment can save more than 600 gallons a month.
  2. Host a decorate-your-water-bottle day. Have each family member pick out their favorite reusable water bottle to decorate. These water bottles reduce plastic and water waste.

Back-to-School Conservation

It’s back-to-school season, and we hope our local families are having a wonderful time learning new things and establishing routines. Here are some easy ways to practice water conservation while you get back into the swing of things.

  1. Morning routines mean brushed teeth and fresh faces. Teach your children to turn the faucets off tightly after each use. They might even consider washing their face or brushing their teeth while in the shower to save water.
  2. Back-to-school clothes mean lots of laundry. Try to match the water level to the size of the load to conserve water.

Water-Conserving Sprinkler Trick

Here’s a fun way to beat the heat and water your grass sustainably.

When the kids need to cool off and play, run a sprinkler where your lawn needs it. We suggest pairing this summer fun with a few popsicles.

Extreme Heat Discussion

This summer has been hot! It’s essential to take care of our water and ourselves in the face of extreme heat. Here are a few tips to conserve water and stay healthy.

  1. Avoid running the tap every time you need a cool drink. Keep a pitcher of water in the fridge instead so that every drop goes down you and not the drain.
  2. Designate one glass for drinking water each day. This will reduce the number of dishwasher runs.
