Beauty That Saves Water

Looking to cut back on your water use without giving up a beautiful yard? Native and drought-tolerant plants are a smart, sustainable alternative to grass—and they help cool your space better than rocks or cement.

Here are 5 water-wise plants perfect for the Beaumont area and much of Southern California:

  • California Fuchsia (Epilobium canum) – Bright red flowers that attract hummingbirds and thrive in the heat.
  • Deer Grass (Muhlenbergia rigens) – Elegant, low-maintenance ornamental grass that adds movement and texture.
  • Cleveland Sage (Salvia clevelandii) – Fragrant, purple-flowering shrub with pollinator appeal and very low water needs.
  • Toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia) – A native evergreen with red berries in winter; great for birds and privacy.
  • California Buckwheat (Eriogonum fasciculatum) – Long-blooming, hardy shrub that supports local pollinators.

🌱 These plants are not only water-efficient, but they also support local wildlife and help reduce your water bill—a win for your wallet and the environment.

Project Spotlight: Investing in Reliable Water Infrastructure

We’re excited to highlight a key infrastructure project currently underway: the construction of a Non-Potable Water Pressure Regulating and Metering Station near Palmer Ave. and Armour Ave. This project, part of our 2600 Zone to 2400 Zone system, includes the installation of a flow meter to measure water delivery and a pressure regulating station to ensure safe, efficient water movement between pressure zones.

💵 Project Investment: $389,200
📍 Location: Palmer Ave. & Armour Ave.
🔧 Purpose: Control pressure and monitor non-potable water flow between zones

Projects like these may not always be visible, but they play a vital role in maintaining the integrity and efficiency of our system. By managing pressure and tracking flow, we protect pipelines, improve system performance, and support responsible use of our most precious resource, water.

“Smart infrastructure like this helps us plan for the future while taking care of today’s needs,” said BCVWD Board President Daniel Slawson. “Projects like the new regulating and metering station may not always be visible to the public, but they are essential to keeping our water system running smoothly and efficiently. By managing pressure and monitoring flow between zones, we’re protecting the integrity of the entire system, reducing strain on pipelines, and using water responsibly. It’s just one way we continue investing in the community’s long-term sustainability and resilience.”

Innovation in Action: Heli-Hydrants Are Here!

BCVWD was proud to join regional partners on June 12 at the ribbon-cutting for the first of seven life-saving Heli-Hydrants, developed by the San Gorgonio Pass Water Agency (SGPWA) and funded through the American Rescue Plan Act with support from Supervisor Dr. YxstianGutierrez.

These innovative tank-based systems allow helicopters to refill with water in under 10 seconds, which is a critical advantage during wildfire response. As fires like the Wolf Fire threaten our communities, these new tools help ensure a faster, more effective defense.

👏 We commend SGPWA for their vision, leadership, and commitment to regional safety. BCVWD is proud to support and partner in efforts that strengthen emergency response and protect our residents and resources.

“The Heli-Hydrant project is a shining example of what can be accomplished when regional agencies come together for the good of the community,” said John Covington, BCVWD Board Member. “We’re proud to support forward-thinking solutions like this that prioritize safety and resilience.”

Thank You to Our First Responders!

In July, the Idyllwild Fire Protection District visited our main office to lead a hands-on fire safety training for BCVWD staff. Their team provided classroom instruction and live fire demonstrations that gave our employees the chance to safely practice putting out small fires using fire extinguishers, fire blankets – even baking soda!

We are incredibly grateful for their time, guidance, and expertise, and we appreciate the strong partnerships we continue to build with local first responders. This training builds on similar exercises we’ve had in past years with CAL FIRE / Riverside County Fire Department through the City of Beaumont, and we’re proud to continue this spirit of collaboration.

👩‍🚒👨‍🚒 To all fire professionals who protect our communities, THANK YOU!

“We value the collaboration and dedication of the Idyllwild Fire Protection District and the Beaumont-Cherry Valley Water District. This recent hands-on training strengthens our team’s readiness and highlights the importance of regional cooperation in protecting our communities,” stated Andy Ramirez, BCVWD Board Member.

August is National Water Quality Month!

Imagine life without clean water – no tap to quench your thirst, no lakes or rivers to enjoy, no showers, no safe water for wildlife. Every drop matters, and we all play a role in protecting it. 💧

At BCVWD, we work hard to deliver safe, high-quality water to more than 22,000 customers. But clean water doesn’t just start at the source, it starts at home.

“We’re all partners in protecting water quality,” said Board Member David Hoffman. “At BCVWD, we do our part to ensure safe, reliable water every day, but it also takes everyday choices from our customers to keep our local water sources clean and healthy. Together, we make a lasting impact.”

Here are the Top 5 Ways You Can Make a Big Impact from home:

  1. Wash your car at a car wash – 🚗 Car washes filter and treat dirty water, unlike driveway washing, which sends chemicals straight to storm drains.
  2. Pick up after your pets – 🐾 Pet waste is packed with nitrogen, which can harm rivers, lakes, and aquatic life.
  3. Avoid phosphorus-based fertilizers – 🌱 These chemicals can run off into local waterways, disrupting ecosystems and harming wildlife.
  4. Never flush medications – 💊 Flushed meds can pollute drinking water and affect aquatic species. Use proper disposal programs instead.
  5. Recycle used oil and antifreeze – 🛢️ Auto fluids are toxic and should be taken to a recycling center or service station—never poured down a drain.

Together, we can protect our community’s most precious resource, clean water. #NationalWaterQualityMonth #BCVWD #ProtectOurWater #BeWaterWise #WaterWithHeart

Celebrating World Nature Conservation Day

Today, we join the global community in recognizing World Nature Conservation Day, a time to reflect on how we protect the natural resources that sustain life, especially water.

  2. 🚿 Shorten your showers
  3. 💧 Fix leaks right away
