Replacing Aging Water Mains Before Problems Occur
One of the best ways to provide reliable water service isn’t always responding to emergencies, it’s preventing them from happening in the first place.
As part of its ongoing Capital Improvement Program, Beaumont-Cherry Valley Water District is preparing to replace more than 1,000 feet of aging 4-inch steel water main along Avenida Miravilla with new ductile iron pipe. During project planning, District staff identified an additional section of aging pipeline nearby that had also reached the end of its useful life and recommended replacing it at the same time, creating a longer, more reliable section of water main.
By completing both sections together, BCVWD can improve system reliability, reduce the likelihood of future water main breaks, and minimize the need for emergency repairs that can disrupt neighborhoods and traffic.
“Reliable water service begins with reliable infrastructure,” said BCVWD Board Member John Covington. “Replacing aging pipelines before they fail is one of the smartest investments we can make. It helps reduce unexpected outages, improves service for our customers, and allows the District to use public funds more efficiently by planning projects instead of responding to emergencies.”
The project will replace older steel pipe with durable ductile iron pipe, a material designed to provide decades of dependable service. By coordinating construction and pavement restoration as one project, the District is also making efficient use of construction resources while reducing future disruptions to the area.
While most water infrastructure remains underground and out of sight, it plays an essential role in delivering safe, reliable drinking water every day. Projects like this ensure BCVWD’s water distribution system continues to serve the community today while preparing for tomorrow.
