Every Fire Hydrant Protects Someone

Most people pass dozens of fire hydrants every week without giving them much thought. Yet each hydrant serves an important purpose.

Strategically located throughout our community, fire hydrants help firefighters respond quickly when homes, businesses, schools, or open spaces are threatened by fire. Although they often go unnoticed, they are a critical part of the emergency response system that helps protect lives and property every day.

“Fire hydrants quietly serve our community every day, even when we don’t notice them,” said BCVWD Board Member Daniel Slawson. “Protecting them means protecting our neighbors, our families, and the firefighters who depend on them during emergencies.”

Unfortunately, over the last few months, water agencies across Southern California have experienced an increase in fire hydrant thefts and vandalism, including here in the Beaumont-Cherry Valley area.

Removing a hydrant isn’t simply taking a piece of metal. It damages critical public infrastructure, requires emergency repairs, and can affect equipment firefighters rely on when responding to emergencies. Replacing a stolen hydrant also requires valuable staff time and public resources that could otherwise be dedicated to maintaining and improving the water system.

BCVWD crews regularly inspect, test, and maintain fire hydrants throughout the District to help ensure they are ready when they’re needed most. Protecting these assets helps safeguard public safety while also protecting the community’s investment in its water infrastructure.

We appreciate our community’s continued support in helping protect these important public assets. If you notice suspicious activity around a fire hydrant, please do not approach those involved. Instead, report the activity to your local law enforcement agency.
