Billing updates

Ever wondered how your water bill is calculated? Let’s walk you through it.

At Beaumont-Cherry Valley Water District (BCVWD), we’re committed to delivering water that’s not only safe and reliable — but also billed fairly and transparently. That’s why we recently presented a detailed overview to our Board of Directors, breaking down how the billing process works and how we’re addressing customer concerns.

Here’s what you should know:

🔹 We use two types of meters:

  • AMI meters automatically send readings to our office around the 1st of the month — no need for a visit.
  • AMR meters are still in use in some areas and require a drive-by or manual read by our field team.

🔹 What happens if a meter can’t be read?
If the meter is behind a locked gate or otherwise unreadable, we estimate usage based on your historical consumption — and always document how and why.

🔹 We bill most customers every two months, capturing about 60 days of water use. This helps ensure fairness and consistency for all customers, even as we continue upgrading meters across the District.

🔹 Billing accuracy is a top priority.
We carefully review meter reads before generating bills, looking for leaks, stuck meters, or anything unusual. If something seems off, our team investigates and follows up.

🔹 One customer’s question led to stronger communication.
When a resident reached out about the timing of their meter read, we used it as an opportunity to explain our process and share our plans for even more transparency going forward — including more digital tools for customer access.

“When customers reach out with questions, it’s an opportunity to do better” stated BCVWD Board Vice President, Lona Williams.  “We want everyone to understand how their bill is calculated and know we’re committed to fairness and accuracy in every step of the process.”

Worlds Ocean Day

Water connects us all—from local rivers and aquifers to the vast oceans. 🌊 Today, we join millions around the globe in recognizing World Oceans Day, a movement that began at the 1992 Earth Summit and was officially recognized by the United Nations in 2002.

While the Beaumont-Cherry Valley Water District doesn’t draw water from the ocean, we understand how every action upstream affects ecosystems downstream. Supporting sustainable water use, reducing pollution, and protecting water quality at home helps protect our planet’s oceans too.

“At BCVWD, we believe that managing all natural resources provides a sustainable future. Protecting surface or ground water is essential, whether it flows through our community or into the oceans, is part of our shared commitment and responsibility” said John Covington, Board Director. “Water is life, and by conserving it, we protect and ensure future generations have this precious commodity.”

Whether you enjoy kayaking, tide pooling, or simply turning off the faucet when brushing your teeth, you’re helping protect our oceans. Let’s keep the momentum going.

Important Reminder: Rate Adjustment Now in Effect 📣

As part of a previously approved rate adjustment, you may notice changes on your upcoming water bill. The new rates took effect May 1, 2025, and help ensure we can continue providing safe, reliable water service to over 22,000 customers.

Why the increase?
✅ Rising costs in insurance, electricity, and general operations—including adjustments to keep staff wages at market median
✅ Needed funding for Capital Improvement Projects to upgrade and replace aging infrastructure like pipelines, wells, and pumping stations

With about 46 employees serving our entire community, every dollar is invested thoughtfully to support long-term sustainability.

Thank you for your understanding and continued partnership in maintaining our water system.

Outdoor Landscaping!

Summer Is Here—And So Is Higher Water Use! 💧🌞

As temperatures rise, it’s natural to want to keep your landscape looking green and healthy. But did you know that increasing your sprinkler time or watering more frequently can double your water bill?

Seasonal changes, especially the transition into summer, have a huge impact on your water usage, with outdoor irrigation being the biggest contributor.

👉 A few extra minutes per sprinkler zone, or an extra watering day each week, adds up quickly!
👉 Watering during cooler hours and using mulch can help reduce evaporation and keep your yard thriving with less water.
👉 Check your irrigation timer and adjust it for the season—your lawn might not need as much as you think!

A small change today can prevent surprise charges on your next bill. For tips on efficient watering, visit https://bcvwd.gov/water-conservation-tips/

Smart Water Progress at BCVWD: Installations Complete, Optimization Underway

Beaumont-Cherry Valley Water District (BCVWD) is excited to share a major milestone in our Automated Meter Reading (AMR) and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) project — all smart meter installations are now complete! This transformative effort, which began in 2015, has replaced over 21,800 traditional meters with modern, high-accuracy smart meters that enhance water system reliability and set the foundation for better service.

“We’re proud to have completed the installation phase of this critical remote metering upgrade,” said BCVWD Board Director Andy Ramirez. “We are now focusing on fine-tuning the system to improve operations, and deliver new tools that put more information in our customers’ hands.”

✅ What’s Done:

• 21,800+ meters installed
• Water loss reduced from ~10% to almost 5%
• Integration with pipeline replacements for better accuracy

🔄 What’s in Progress:

• Some routes still read manually as we phase in remote reading
• Streamlining the billing system to use enhanced meter data
• Developing customer tools for real-time usage monitoring and alerts
• Planning for future AMI station expansion
• Addressing long-term maintenance of meter boxes

This project is transforming how we manage water in our community — and we’re excited about what comes next. 📲 Learn more at https.bcvwd.gov
